Evan went to school with Youko_Kurama, my daughter, and that is how I met him. He was often mentioned in conversation by her and was one of several students at her high school who was in to anime and joined the new anime club. Kids from the club attended Fanime 2004, but unfortunately for Evan his parents wouldn't let him. Youko graduated and Evan, along with other kids from that year, stayed with the anime club and attended Fanime 2005. Some had costumes and some didn't, but Evan didn't let that stop him. He dressed up in what he called his "Shirt Ninja" attire and preceded to hug as many people as he could before he got slapped. This was Evan... spreading the joy of life that seemed to be part of his genetic design. I only caught sight of him for a moment on Saturday and Youko spent only a few minutes being able to talk to him. He was having fun and so were we. With over 6,500 attendees at Fanime is isn't uncommon to not see some people who you know are there unless there is definite planning on all parties concerned, so we didn't run into them again. We were told that Evan and the others had fun at Fanime and planned to return, Evan with a costume, for 2006. On September 13th Evans plans were altered. Evan and his father stopped, on his way to school, to help a stranded vehicle that was in the road. While helping the motorist, a car came around and accidentally struck Evan and he passed away at the hospital. So at JTAF 3 some of the kids planned to be "Shirt Ninja's" in memory of Evan. It lightly rained all day Saturday so that kind of put a damper on things. Sunday was the scheduled time for the Shirt Ninja shoot. I looked outside, as it rained buckets, flashed lightning and sounded out thunder a couple of times, and thought to myself, "Wonder what Evan would think of a "Shirt Ninja" shoot in this kind of weather?" I knew as soon as I thought it that Evan would probably be cheering everyone up and telling them to wait cause it would clear up or they would just do it inside. He was full of optimism. About that time I got a call from my "Shirt Ninja" cospeeps and they were a go to do the shoot, unfortunately not all could come Sunday and they wanted to know if I would still take the pics. I said, "If they were willing then I am. Let's see if the weather gets a little better in a while." sure enough it did. So if you happen across a "Shirt Ninja" at a con know that it's ok to get hugged and try not to slap him, because you never know the whole story till the end of the book.
Thank you for letting me take pics. Till we see each other again.... Anime Corrupted Wishes & Deviant Cosplay Dreams!! ^^) ... BSaphire
